Pita bread has its origins somewhere in Western Asia, and has been a popular form of bread ever since. Try it with some hummus, tzatziki, or any form of dip you like. Slice it and toast it to make your own batch of pita chips. Cut it down the middle and you have the beginnings of your own pita sandwich that you can fill with falafel, gyros, or some type of kebab. With a little yeast and some high heat you can make your own pita pocket with this recipe. At the local Indian store near me you can buy 10 pitas for $1.00, but you spend much less if you learn how to make pita bread. Ingredients. To activate yeast: 1 cup flour 1 pack dry active yeast 1 cup water Mix together, then let sit 15-20 minutes until bubbles form To make bread: 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 1/2 cups flour Mix together Slowly add 1/2 cup flour if dough sticks to bowl Then knead 5 to 6 minutes Oil dough with 1 teaspoon olive oil Cover and let sit for 2 hours Cut into 8 pieces Roll into balls Cover for 5 minutes Roll out and flatten Cook on a pan 1 1/2 minutes each side on medium to high heat
